Indonesia Ministry: Resolving Filipino Descent Status Needs Cross-Sectoral Synergy

Indonesia's Ministry of Law and Human Rights in North Sulawesi is tackling the complex issue of resolving the legal status of Persons of Filipino Descent (PFDs) within its jurisdiction. The process demands a coordinated effort across various sectors, involving multiple Indonesian ministries, local governments, and crucial bilateral coordination with the Philippines.

Hendrik Pagiling, head of the North Sulawesi Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, emphasized that this is a strategic agenda requiring sustained synergy. His office is strengthening coordination with regional governments and stakeholders to improve data collection, verification, and the overall resolution of PFD legal status. This collaborative approach is essential for providing legal certainty and citizenship to the affected population.

Further underscoring the importance of this issue, the Director General of General Legal Administration of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Widodo, met with the Governor of North Sulawesi. Their discussions focused on strategic steps to expedite the handling of PFDs through a coordinated, comprehensive approach centered on legal certainty. The collaboration is vital as the PFD issue intersects with general legal administration, citizenship, immigration, population matters, and bilateral relations between Indonesia and the Philippines.
