Indonesia’s attorney general urges prosecutors to protect integrity and institutional honor

Indonesia’s Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin used the anniversary of the Attorney General’s Office to warn prosecutors against trading on the institution’s name for personal gain.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the founding of the prosecution service, Burhanuddin said integrity was non-negotiable. He urged all prosecutors to apply honesty, morality, justice and ethics in their work, saying strong integrity and sound moral conduct could close opportunities for misconduct and protect the institution’s standing.

He reminded prosecutors that their rank represented more than an official attribute. It symbolized honor and responsibility, he said, and should be carried with humility. “Never ask for or accept anything in the name of the institution,” Burhanuddin said. Even a small act, he warned, could damage the dignity of the Attorney General’s Office.

Burhanuddin also called for prosecutors to work with other law enforcement bodies to create coordinated, trusted and effective enforcement. Such cooperation, he said, should not come at the expense of the prosecution service’s independence, objectivity or integrity.

He described public trust as both an honor and a responsibility that must be protected through integrity, professionalism and service. “Every Adhyaksa official is a reflection of the institution,” he said. “Our attitude, words and conduct do not merely reflect us as individuals. They determine the dignity and authority of the Attorney General’s Office in the eyes of the public.”
