GRIB Jaya to sue creator of petition calling for its dissolution

GRIB Jaya is preparing to sue the creator of an online petition demanding the organization’s dissolution after deadly unrest in Jakarta. The group denies any connection to the violence and says its chairman was trying to contain the situation.

Wilson Colling, GRIB Jaya’s deputy chairman for legal affairs and advocacy, said the organization would issue a legal notice to the petition’s creator. “We will issue a legal notice to the creator of the petition. We are currently preparing it,” he told Tempo on Sept. 1.

The petition appeared on Change.org on Aug. 30 under the account name Want Safe Home. By Sept. 2, it had gathered 19,845 signatures. Its creator alleged that a man identified as Bambang died after GRIB Jaya members beat him during unrest on Aug. 27, following a demonstration outside the House of Representatives and People’s Consultative Assembly complex.

GRIB Jaya rejected the allegation. Colling said the organization had no ties to the groups responsible for the violence. Its chairman, Rosario de Marshall, known as Hercules, was reportedly near the scene, but Colling said he was monitoring events and helping prevent rioters from moving toward West Jakarta.

Jakarta Police spokesman Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto said officers found Bambang unconscious in the Pejompongan area of Central Jakarta after securing the location. Police medical personnel took him to Mintohardjo Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment. His body was transferred to Kramat Jati Police Hospital for identification and forensic examination. Hermanto said Bambang’s family did not agree to an autopsy.

After the location had been secured, the Jakarta Police Medical and Health Division evacuated a man who was unconscious.
