Indonesia's Digital Population Identity System Expands Access to Government Services

Indonesia is advancing the digitalization of its population administration services with the introduction of the Digital Population Identity (IKD) system. This initiative aims to streamline access to various government services for citizens, according to Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian.

Digitalization of population administration will make it easier for the public to access various government services.

The IKD platform currently enables users to digitally apply for services such as printing family cards (KK) and Indonesian citizen biodata, processing individual move-out certificates, and splitting family cards. It also facilitates civil registration services, including the issuance of birth certificates for citizens with or without a National Identity Number (NIK), and the issuance of death certificates.

Further services available through IKD include changes to educational data, applications for non-permanent residency, and access to blood type information. Minister Karnavian emphasized that as the IKD becomes more integrated, citizens will rely less on physical electronic ID cards (e-KTP) for administrative processes. The digital identity will serve as the primary means for verification, validation, and accessing electronic public services.

Technology is just a tool. The key to success still lies in the quality of human resources managing it.

Director General of Population and Civil Registration at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Teguh Setyabudi, reported that as of July 31, 2026, over 21 million people had activated their IKD. The system supports data utilization via QR codes, allowing residents to share their data or scan provider-issued QR codes using the IKD app. The development of Single Sign-On (SSO) functionality is also underway, enabling easier data verification and access to online services.

As of July 31, 2026, the number of users who have activated IKD reached 21,152,840 people.
