Indonesia's House of Representatives Agrees on 12 Key Points in Domestic Workers Protection Bill

After extensive and constructive deliberations, the Indonesian House of Representatives' Legislative Body has reached a significant agreement on the Draft Law on the Protection of Domestic Workers (RUU PPRT). This milestone, achieved after thorough discussions on various inventory of problems (DIM), brings us closer to establishing much-needed legal protections for millions of domestic workers across the nation.

The RUU PPRT, now poised for ratification, is structured into 12 chapters and 37 articles. It represents a crucial step forward in addressing the long-standing challenges faced by domestic workers. The legislative body has worked diligently to incorporate solutions that ensure fairness, dignity, and security for these essential members of our society.

Among the pivotal points agreed upon are the principles of protection based on kinship, respect for human rights, justice, welfare, and legal certainty. The bill also outlines clear regulations for recruitment, whether direct or indirect, and clarifies who is considered a domestic worker under this law. Furthermore, it mandates health and employment social security guarantees, alongside provisions for vocational education and training, ensuring domestic workers are equipped and supported.

Crucially, the RUU PPRT establishes mechanisms for oversight and guidance, involving both central and regional governments, and empowering local community leaders (RT/RW) to help prevent violence against domestic workers. It also addresses the issue of companies placing domestic workers (P3RT), prohibiting wage deductions and ensuring they operate legally. This comprehensive approach aims to create a safer and more equitable environment for all domestic workers in Indonesia.
