Indonesia's Independence Reflection: 'Rahmatan Lil Alamin' vs. 'Serakahnomic'

The concept of 'Rahmatan lil alamin,' meaning mercy and blessing for all of creation, is a core tenet of Islam derived from a verse in the Quran (Surat Al-Anbiya, verse 107). This principle asserts that the Prophet Muhammad was sent as a mercy not just to humans, but to the entire universe.

The term 'rahmatan' signifies compassion, grace, or goodness, while 'lil alamin' refers to all the worlds or the entire universe. In practice, 'Rahmatan lil alamin' calls for mutual respect, mutual assistance, prioritizing collective well-being over short-term gains, avoiding harm to others, and fostering a protective environment. This extends to treating all beings, humans, animals, plants, and the environment, with kindness and justice.

As 'khalifah fil ardh' (stewards on Earth), humans are tasked with spreading compassion, peace, and justice, protecting human rights, promoting welfare, and preventing oppression. This responsibility is universal, transcending economic status, ethnicity, tribe, race, group, or religion. Towards the environment, it means preserving nature, preventing damage, and managing resources wisely for current and future generations.

This holistic concept encompasses relationships with God ('habluminallah'), with fellow humans ('habluminannas'), and with the natural world. It is presented as a dynamic and timeless principle, rooted in pure hearts and high moral values, applicable in practical ways across all professions. Whether as a teacher, a professional, or in any other role, the essence of 'Rahmatan lil alamin' involves acting with patience, sincerity, and a commitment to the well-being of all.
