Indonesia's Lido SEZ and Trump-linked golf clubhouse resume construction after months of uncertainty

Construction has restarted at Indonesia's Lido Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in West Java, signaling a return to normalcy after a period of uncertainty. The development includes a clubhouse associated with a Trump Organization-branded golf course, which has been operational since last year.

The project faced a significant setback in February of the previous year when Indonesia's environment ministry suspended development activities. The ministry cited concerns regarding water management and sedimentation affecting Lido Lake, located within the SEZ. This halt raised questions about the future of the broader 1,040-hectare Lido SEZ, which is promoted as a major entertainment and resort destination near Jakarta.

Every sealing or sanction involves government enforcement. Government enforcement is: 'You have to do A, B, C, D, E'. If they fulfil the requirements, the sanction can be lifted. If not, then it's impossible to remove it (the seal).

However, the environment ministry has since withdrawn its suspension order. Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat explained that such sanctions are intended to compel parties to comply with regulations. He confirmed that the Lido SEZ developers have fulfilled the necessary requirements, leading to the lifting of the suspension. An official from the national council for special economic zones also confirmed that the prohibition was removed earlier this year.

The clubhouse, set to be the largest under the Trump Organization, is expected to be completed this year and will feature multiple restaurants, a large ballroom, and meeting rooms. This development is part of the larger Trump International Golf Club Lido, within the Lido SEZ, also known as MNC Lido City. MNC Land Lido, an arm of the Indonesian conglomerate MNC Group, has reportedly taken remedial actions, including measures to prevent soil and sediment runoff into the lake, addressing the environmental concerns that led to the initial halt.
