Indonesia's National Nutrition Agency Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Wasteful Procurement

The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has become the center of public attention, facing accusations of extravagant spending on goods and services that appear to contradict the core mission of its flagship "free nutritious meal" (MBG) project. Reports highlight procurements ranging from tens of thousands of electric motorcycles to the extensive use of event organizers (EOs), sparking concerns about fiscal responsibility and the efficient use of public funds.

The motorcycles have not yet been distributed. After everything is complete, they will first be recorded as State Property (BMN) before being distributed.

BGN Head Dadan Hindayana has attempted to clarify these expenditures, framing the electric motorcycle acquisition as a planned 2025 budget item intended to support the operational needs of the MBG project, particularly for nutrition fulfillment units. He asserted that the procurement numbers have been misrepresented, with actual orders for 21,801 units out of a planned 25,000, and that these vehicles will be registered as state property before distribution. Similarly, the engagement of EOs, totaling 31 packages and costing Rp 113.9 billion, is explained as a strategic necessity during BGN's foundational year, when internal resources were still being developed to manage large-scale activities.

The use of EO services was carried out as part of the institution's strategic needs. Because, in the first year, BGN was still building the system and operational governance.

However, the agency's explanations have not fully dispelled public skepticism. The sheer scale of some procurements, coupled with the significant budget allocated for EO services, raises questions about prioritization, especially when the project's primary goal is to provide nutrition. The denial of a Rp 4 trillion budget for items like laptops and tableware, with Hindayana specifying procurements of approximately 5,000 laptops and tableware for 315 units at a cost of Rp 215 billion, indicates a significant discrepancy between public perception and official figures. This situation underscores a critical need for greater transparency and accountability in public procurement, ensuring that all expenditures align with stated objectives and serve the public interest effectively.
