Indonesia's Supreme Court rejects former Garuda CEO's appeal in corruption case

Indonesia's Supreme Court has rejected a final appeal by former Garuda Indonesia CEO Emirsyah Satar, upholding his 10-year prison sentence for corruption. The court dismissed Satar's request for a judicial review of the case, which involved corrupt practices in the procurement of CRJ-1000 and ATR 72-600 aircraft.

Satar had presented two new pieces of evidence, or 'novum,' in his appeal. One was a previous Supreme Court ruling on a co-defendant, Soetikno Soedarjo, which Satar's lawyers argued conflicted with his own conviction. The other was a letter from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) confirming the settlement of fines and restitution payments.

However, the court found these arguments insufficient to overturn the original verdict. The judicial review was heard by a panel of judges, and the decision was announced on Wednesday, July 22. This rejection means Emirsyah Satar must now serve the full 10-year sentence previously handed down in the cassation ruling.
