Indonesia Sets August Coal Prices: High-Calorie Drops, Low-Calorie Rises

Indonesia's benchmark coal price (HBA) for the first half of August 2026 shows a mixed trend, with high-calorie coal seeing a price decrease while lower-calorie varieties experienced an increase. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced the new reference prices on Friday, August 7, 2026.

The price for coal with a calorific value of 6,322 kcal/kg GAR was set at US$124.44 per ton, a drop of US$7.41 from the previous period. Director General of Minerals and Coal, Tri Winarno, explained that this decline reflects lower actual coal sales prices recorded between June 8 and July 7, 2026, which form the basis for royalty calculations.

Conversely, coal with lower calorific values saw price hikes. The HBA for 5,300 kcal/kg GAR rose by US$3.37 to US$93.27 per ton. Similarly, coal at 4,100 kcal/kg GAR increased by US$2.23 to US$65.48 per ton, and coal at 3,400 kcal/kg GAR saw a slight increase of US$0.19 to US$45.27 per ton.

These price movements differ from the trends observed in early July 2026, indicating fluctuating market conditions for Indonesian coal. The ministry's announcement provides key data for the energy sector, influencing royalty payments and market expectations.
