Indonesia, South Korea Agree to Fast-Track Defense and Investment Cooperation

Indonesia and South Korea have committed to speeding up their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, aiming for tangible outcomes in key sectors.

Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono and his South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun, met on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila. They agreed to expedite commitments made during the Indonesian President's visit to South Korea in April, particularly in defense, energy, and investment.

South Korea plans to encourage its companies to invest in developing Indonesian shipyards. This initiative aims to support the construction of commercial vessels and strengthen Indonesia's domestic maritime industry. Minister Cho expressed South Korea's dedication to this endeavor.

Beyond economic and strategic ties, the ministers addressed regional and global matters. Minister Cho voiced support for Indonesia's efforts to de-escalate tensions in Iran and pursue a peaceful resolution. Both nations reaffirmed their shared dedication to strengthening multilateralism and upholding a rules-based international order.

The bilateral meeting underscored the mutual resolve of both nations to forge a more substantial strategic partnership that contributes to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
