Indonesia Warns of Criminal Penalties for Forest and Land Fires Amidst Blazes

Authorities in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province are issuing stern warnings about criminal sanctions for those deliberately starting forest and land fires. The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) highlighted that opening land by burning or carelessly discarding cigarette butts can lead to criminal prosecution.

Central Sulawesi Police have issued a circular detailing penalties for perpetrators. The BPBD emphasized that these fires not only destroy vegetation but also threaten wildlife habitats and agricultural land, impacting community livelihoods. Public awareness and active participation are deemed crucial for prevention.

Between August 17 and 22, 2026, the region experienced six consecutive fires, affecting approximately 79 hectares across Tojo Una-Una, Donggala, and Palu. Tojo Una-Una reported the most incidents with four cases, while Donggala and Palu each had two. The fires, some of which were difficult to access, included incidents in forest areas, agricultural land, and grasslands.

While natural causes like lightning can ignite fires during dry conditions, BPBD head Asbudianto stated that most incidents are strongly suspected to be linked to human actions. One fire in Tojo Una-Una reportedly started from a cigarette butt, spreading rapidly through dry grass and leaves.
