Indonesia Warns Vaping Devices May Be Used for Drug Abuse

Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has issued a warning regarding the potential misuse of electronic cigarettes, or vapes, as a medium for consuming harmful substances and drugs. The agency is prioritizing public education, particularly targeting the younger generation, to raise awareness about these risks.

Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto, Head of the BNN, met with Secretary of the Cabinet Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Indra Wijaya to discuss coordinated efforts in preventing and eradicating drug abuse and trafficking. The meeting, held at the Cabinet Secretariat in Jakarta, highlighted the BNN's achievements in disrupting drug networks and seizing narcotics before they enter circulation.

The BNN's focus on vaping stems from concerns that the devices, often marketed for nicotine or flavored liquids, could be adapted for the use of illicit substances. The agency emphasizes the importance of educating the public to protect them from the threat of drug abuse and to work towards a drug-free Indonesia.

This warning is part of broader initiatives by the Indonesian government to strengthen inter-agency cooperation in drug control. Recent related actions include investigations into international drug trafficking rings, particularly those involving foreign nationals, and considerations for a potential ban on vape products due to health and drug-related concerns.
