Indonesia Welcomes US Prosecution for Bali Bombings Mastermind Hambali

Indonesia has welcomed the decision by the United States to prosecute Encep Nurjaman, more commonly known as Hambali, a notorious terrorism suspect currently detained at Guantanamo Bay.

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, stated on Friday, July 24, 2026, that since Hambali was captured by American agents and has been held in Guantanamo for over two decades, it is appropriate for the US government to proceed with his prosecution.

"Since he was captured by American agents and detained in Guantanamo, it is better for us to welcome the US government to prosecute this case," Yusril said. He added that the Indonesian government has been kept informed of developments in Hambali's case by the US military. Although Hambali was captured with Thai and Spanish passports, his family resides in Indonesia, maintaining a connection to the country.

Hambali, born in West Java in 1964, is accused of masterminding various international terrorist acts, including the devastating 2002 Bali bombings. His legal team has reportedly visited Indonesia to gather defense materials by contacting his family. However, Yusril clarified that the Indonesian government has no plans to repatriate him. Hambali is currently facing prosecution in the United States Military Court.
