Indonesian Agency Suspends Food Unit After 707 Poisoned in Semarang

A food service unit in Semarang, Indonesia, has been temporarily suspended by the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) following a mass food poisoning incident that affected 707 individuals, primarily students. The affected individuals consumed a free nutritional meal provided by the Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi (SPPG) Karangturi.

Victims, including 693 students and 14 teachers from SMK Negeri 6 Semarang, reported symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after eating the meal on Friday, July 31, 2026. BGN head Sudaryono visited several hospitals in Semarang where patients were being treated, noting that most were recovering well.

Initial investigations by BGN suggest the poisoning may be linked to ingredients like cassava leaves and rendang spices, although laboratory tests are pending. Sudaryono indicated that the early preparation of the food before distribution might also be a contributing factor. "We need at least 7 days, 5 working days, for the results," Sudaryono stated, referring to the laboratory analysis.

To prevent future occurrences, BGN is expediting the rollout of a digital system designed to meticulously document and monitor all stages of food production. This system aims to track cooking times, menus, and ingredient usage. Sudaryono also urged health officials, teachers, and parents to actively supervise the menu and preparation of meals provided by SPPG units. He emphasized that BGN has zero tolerance for negligence and will take firm action against any violations found during the investigation.
