Indonesian Authorities Rescue Over 1,200 Sea Turtle Eggs

Indonesian authorities have successfully rescued 1,286 sea turtle eggs in Sambas, West Kalimantan, marking a significant effort in marine conservation. The operation involved multiple agencies working collaboratively to protect these vulnerable marine creatures.

Personnel from the Indonesian Army's Task Force for Border Security (Satgas Pamtas) discovered 96 eggs during a patrol in the Temajuk area. Shortly after, the Indonesian Quarantine Agency secured an additional 1,190 eggs in Sintete, Sambas Regency.

Turtle protection requires collaboration from all parties. Speed of response, coordination between agencies, and adherence to procedures are key to ensuring that every finding is handled properly.

Teams from the Pontianak Marine Management Center (KKP Pontianak) immediately initiated an investigation, data collection, and evacuation process. Veterinarians were involved to assess the condition and fertility of the eggs.

All stages of handling are carried out with attention to conservation, technical, administrative, and law enforcement aspects.

Director General of Marine Spatial Management at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Koswara, stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration, rapid response, and adherence to procedures in protecting turtles and preserving marine ecosystems. He noted that the 96 eggs found in Temajuk are believed to be from green turtles, are in good condition, and show signs of fertility. These have been incubated at the KKP Pontianak office.

Meanwhile, the 1,190 eggs from Sintete are suspected to be from hawksbill and green turtles. However, these eggs did not show signs of fertility and will be handled according to established protocols. Head of KKP Pontianak, Syarif Iwan Taruna Alkadrie, urged the public to actively participate in turtle conservation by reporting any illegal activities involving turtles or their eggs to the authorities.
