Indonesian Clerics Denounce Israel's Seizure of Aid Flotilla, Journalist

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued a strong condemnation of Israel's actions against the Global Sumud Flotilla, an initiative carrying humanitarian aid and activists towards Gaza. The interception and arrest of around 100 individuals, including Republika journalist Bambang Noroyono, in international waters is viewed by MUI as a shameful act that underscores Israel's fear of those championing peace and humanitarian causes. This incident, occurring on May 18, 2026, has prompted a firm call for action from Indonesia's highest Islamic clerical body.

On behalf of MUI, I want to emphasize that Israel's actions in blocking the humanitarian mission via the Sumud Flotila ship, including the abduction of the Republika journalist participating in this mission, are shameful actions.

MUI, through its Chairman for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, Prof. Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, expressed deep concern and urged the Indonesian government to take immediate steps to secure the release of its citizens, particularly the journalists. The council views Israel's obstruction of the humanitarian mission as a display of "cowardice" and believes such actions will ultimately backfire, galvanizing greater international support for the Palestinian cause. MUI asserts that instead of deterring activists, Israel's aggressive stance will embolden more volunteers to challenge the blockade and deliver aid to Gaza.
