Indonesian Defense Ministry: No Ban on Hijab for University Cadets

Indonesia's Ministry of Defense has clarified that the Defense University (Unhan) does not have specific regulations banning female cadets from wearing the hijab. This statement comes in response to social media claims that a cadet was forced to withdraw for refusing to remove her headscarf.

The ministry, through a press release, emphasized that Unhan's rectorate regulation on cadet life actually includes piety as part of the cadet code of honor. Cadets are encouraged to practice their respective faiths and are guaranteed the right to religious observance and mental development during their education.

However, the ministry did acknowledge that adjustments to attire are required for basic military training (latsarmil) conducted at the Military Academy in Magelang. These adjustments are made for specific activities where safety, security, and freedom of movement are paramount, such as those requiring specialized gear or extensive physical exertion.

"These provisions are technical arrangements for the implementation of latsarmil, and are not intended as restrictions on beliefs or the practice of religious teachings," stated Brig. Gen. Rico Ricardo Sirait, head of the Defense Information Bureau. He assured that Muslim female cadets can wear the hijab in their living quarters, during certain off-campus activities, and while on internships. The use of cadet uniforms will be adapted to the specific nature of training activities while maintaining safety considerations.
