Indonesian lawmakers urge government to prioritize teacher salary increases

Lalu Hadrian Irfani, Deputy Speaker of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), has called on the government to promptly increase the salaries and benefits of teachers, emphasizing that their welfare should be a national priority. This appeal comes in the wake of the government's recent decision to raise performance allowances for personnel in the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Ministry of Defense.

Irfani stated that while the increase in allowances for TNI and Ministry of Defense personnel was likely based on thorough studies, he expressed a strong hope that teachers' salaries and benefits would also be elevated. He highlighted that many teachers continue to face economic limitations, underscoring the need for improved compensation.

"The increase in teacher welfare is not merely about fulfilling their rights, but it is a major investment in the nation's future," Irfani said, stressing that teachers are the primary pillar of human resource development. He also drew a comparison with neighboring countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam, where teacher welfare is reportedly significantly better. Commission X remains committed to advocating for enhanced teacher welfare in Indonesia.
