Indonesian man sentenced to life for family murder

Priyo Bagus Setiawan has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of a family in Indramayu, West Java. The verdict, delivered by the Indramayu District Court on Friday, July 3, 2026, exceeded the 20-year prison sentence requested by the public prosecutor's office.

The panel of judges, led by Wimmy D Simarmata, found Setiawan guilty of multiple charges. These included complicity in premeditated murder under Article 459 of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 20(c) of the Criminal Code, and offenses against children under Article 80(3) of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Amendments to Law Number 23 of 2002 on Child Protection, read in conjunction with Law Number 1 of 2026 on the Adjustment of Penalties for violence against children resulting in death.

Eko Supramurbada, Head of the Public Prosecutor's Section at the Indramayu District Attorney's Office, stated that the prosecution respects the court's decision. "The judges' considerations also emphasized justice for the victims, especially considering there were elderly and child victims in this case," Eko explained after the hearing. The court's decision highlighted the need for justice for the five victims, including the vulnerable individuals within the group.
