Indonesian Military ready to assist police in securing August 27 protest

The Indonesian Military (TNI) headquarters has declared its readiness to be involved in securing a protest planned for August 27 in front of the legislative building in Jakarta. However, TNI stressed that the primary responsibility for managing security during demonstrations rests with the police.

"Security is definitely the police's job; the TNI assists with reinforcement upon request," stated Major General Muhammad Nas, Head of the TNI Information Center, on Wednesday. He did not provide specific details regarding the number of personnel that could be deployed for the protest security.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian National Police have urged the public to exercise their right to express opinions in public in an orderly, peaceful, and responsible manner. Police Public Relations Division Head Inspector General Pol. Johnny Eddizon Isir stated that the police respect the right of every citizen to express their opinions, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful and conducive environment.

Isir reminded the public to convey their aspirations with dignity, ensuring they do not infringe upon the rights of others to conduct their activities safely and comfortably. He stressed the collective responsibility to maintain public security and order. The police are prepared to provide services to ensure the smooth and orderly progression of the planned demonstrations.

The protest, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, is expected to involve individuals from Pati and various other groups. They intend to demand that the government take a firm stance against corruption and that the House of Representatives (DPR) promptly pass the Asset Forfeiture Bill. The DPR leadership has stated its openness to receiving the public's aspirations during the protest.
