Indonesian Ministers to Attend Funeral of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has announced plans to attend the funeral of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He intends to travel to Iran on July 9, 2026, accompanied by Ahmad Muzani, the Chairman of Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and a fellow member of the Gerindra party.

The initial Indonesian delegation was to be led by the Ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah Soemirat. However, Iran later informed Indonesia that only officials ranked higher than an ambassador would be permitted to attend the funeral ceremony. This information was reportedly conveyed on July 2, 2026, just days before the funeral proceedings were set to begin.

Sugiono stated that Indonesia had not yet been able to send a replacement envoy after receiving this updated information. He indicated that Iran is currently making arrangements to accommodate his and Muzani's attendance as representatives of Indonesia. The funeral is scheduled to take place amidst a gathering of global leaders and official delegations paying their respects.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israeli attack on his residence on February 28, an incident that also claimed the lives of his family members. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was injured in the attack, has since been appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran. Several international figures, including Russia's Dmitry Medvedev and Turkey's Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, are expected to attend the funeral.
