Indonesian Parliament Open to Receiving Public Aspirations During Protest, Says Speaker

Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, has stated that the parliament is prepared to receive aspirations from the public during a planned protest on August 27. The demonstration is organized by the Pati United Community Alliance (AMPB) and other groups, gathering in front of the DPR building in Jakarta.

"So if the community wants to express their input, then express their aspirations, of course, we will accept them at the DPR building," Puan said on Wednesday, August 26. She also appealed to the protesters to maintain order and avoid any disruptive actions. The Speaker confirmed that the DPR leadership is open to meeting with the protest participants, noting that they have been consistently meeting with various community groups.

Meanwhile, the police are implementing enhanced security measures to manage the anticipated protest. Authorities plan to tighten security along the Merak-Tangerang toll road to intercept potential protesters traveling from outside Java, particularly Sumatra. This measure is in response to information about groups planning to travel from Lampung and other parts of Sumatra to Jakarta for the demonstration.

The protesters are reportedly demanding firm government action against corruption and urging the DPR to expedite the ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill. In addition to the toll road, police will also conduct checks and establish blockades on arterial roads, specifically Jalan Raya Serang, leading to Jakarta. These checks will target vehicles like buses and open-bed trucks that could be used to transport protesters.
