Indonesian President Prabowo hosts Japanese Defense Minister at private residence

President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Japanese Defense Minister Koizumi Shinjiro to his private residence on Jalan Kertanegara IV in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. The meeting, held on Friday, June 12, 2026, was a reciprocal visit following Indonesian Defense Minister's trip to Japan. Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, stated that the discussions centered on advancing defense cooperation following the recent signing of a Defense Cooperation Arrangement (DCA). Key areas explored included personnel exchanges, maritime security, and advancements in defense technology and industry. Both nations also emphasized the importance of developing human resources in defense, including through academic cooperation and the potential admission of Indonesian cadets to Japan's National Defense Academy. During the meeting, Minister Shinjiro presented President Prabowo with a model of the "Mikasa" warship, a gift from his hometown of Yokosuka. Shinjiro shared on Instagram that Prabowo, a former military officer and Defense Minister, was delighted with the present. The meeting at the Kertanegara residence saw Prabowo accompanied by several cabinet members, including the Minister of Defense, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. While the talks covered various aspects of defense collaboration, no immediate decisions were made regarding the procurement of major defense equipment, or 'alutsista.' Rico clarified that such options require further discussion between Japan and Indonesia. The exchange highlights the strengthening defense ties and ongoing dialogue between the two Asian nations.
