Indonesian Red Crescent Holds Wound Healing Workshop in Egypt, Encourages Innovation for Palestinian Patients

The Indonesian Red Crescent (BSMI) is conducting an advanced wound healing workshop in Cairo, Egypt, from August 13-17, 2026, aiming to enhance the treatment of complex wounds for patients, especially those from Gaza.

Led by Prof. Dr. dr. Basuki Supartono, Chairman of BSMI's Consultative Assembly and a professor at UPN Veteran Jakarta's Faculty of Medicine, the workshop is a collaboration with the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) Egypt branch. Doctors from both Egypt and Palestine are participating in the training held at the PRCS Hospital in Cairo. BSMI's delegation also includes Secretary General Muhamad Rudi and Treasurer General dr. Prita Kusumaningsih.

He noted that factors like infection and malnutrition can prolong the inflammatory process, making wound healing challenging. The workshop introduces advanced wound healing techniques using biological methods to support the healing process.

In difficult-to-heal wounds, we face various inhibiting factors, from infection, malnutrition to prolonged inflammation. This biological approach is one of the innovations that can help overcome these problems.

One key focus is the use of biological components, including signaling molecules and cells like stem cells, to encourage tissue regeneration. Prof. Basuki highlighted that this biological approach offers an innovative solution to overcome obstacles in treating chronic wounds. Furthermore, the methods presented are designed for simpler application, often avoiding the need for surgery and requiring bandage changes only about once a week.

This approach offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency, saving time, labor, and materials. "The method is relatively simple and does not require surgery. This can certainly save labor, time, and materials, especially when applied in conditions with limited resources like in Gaza, Palestine," Prof. Basuki stated. The workshop aims to equip medical professionals with these advanced, resource-efficient techniques to better care for patients facing severe injuries.
