Indonesian security minister reports arrests ahead of August 27 protests

Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Djamari Chaniago, announced on Thursday that several individuals have been detained and are undergoing questioning in connection with planned protests. The detentions occurred ahead of a demonstration scheduled for August 27, 2026.

Speaking after a healthy walk event in Jakarta, Minister Chaniago confirmed receiving a report from the Metro Jaya Police Chief indicating that some individuals were apprehended and temporarily held for examination. While the exact number and identities of those detained were not immediately disclosed, the minister indicated that the Police Chief would provide further details in a press statement.

Chaniago emphasized that public demonstrations are a normal part of democratic expression and assured that security forces are prepared to escort the public in conveying their aspirations. He added that the Metro Jaya Regional Police and Jaya Military Command would be vigilant against potential infiltrators, drawing lessons from past protests. The aim is to ensure that the public's demands are delivered effectively to the House of Representatives without interference.

The security apparatus is committed to protecting the rights of citizens to express their views while preventing any actions that could undermine or obscure the protesters' legitimate demands.
