Indonesian students win gold in Korea for diabetes-focused innovation

A group of Indonesian high school students has achieved international recognition, securing a Gold Award at the World Invention Creativity Olympic (WICO) 2026 in South Korea for their innovative medical device, 'GlucoStrip.' The invention aims to combat the growing global concern over high sugar consumption and its link to diabetes.

The winning team, comprising Virty Kiraina Rowi (Kirei), Indira Aulia Ramadhani, Maylaffathiya Alya Mumtaz, Rumaisha Nagib, and Shaffaira Zahra Adityazka, presented their breakthrough at the prestigious event held from July 16 to 18, 2026. Their success marks a significant achievement for young Indonesian innovators on the world stage.

This year's WICO competition was particularly significant as it was aligned with the Asia LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability) exhibition. This integration meant that the judging criteria extended beyond technological novelty. The international panel of experts, academics, and industry practitioners evaluated innovations based on their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) impact, seeking solutions that are socially responsible, promote healthy lifestyles, and are sustainable for the future.

The WICO, organized by the Korea University Invention Association and supported by the South Korean parliament, is a renowned platform for young inventors worldwide. It challenges participants to present fresh ideas and innovative products that address global challenges. The intense competition saw hundreds of young innovators from numerous countries presenting their best technologies and concepts to a discerning international jury.
