Indonesian Umbrella Festival Celebrates Rice Goddess Dewi Sri

The annual Indonesian Umbrella Festival (FESPIN) is set to return for its 13th iteration, this year celebrating the profound cultural and historical significance of rice and its associated deity, Dewi Sri. The festival, themed "Catra Padi – Sepayung Dewi Sri," will take place in Solo from September 4 to 6, 2026.

Rice holds a central place in Indonesian society, deeply embedded in daily life and cultural narratives. The festival seeks to explore this connection, moving beyond rice as merely a staple food to recognize its role in the historical journey, cultural identity, and agricultural heritage of the Nusantara archipelago. This exploration includes examining archaeological evidence and mythological figures like Dewi Sri, the goddess of fertility and prosperity.

Festival Program Director Heru Mataya explained that the journey of rice cultivation has inspired various mythologies and traditions across Indonesia and Asia. "The story of the rice goddess also shares similarities with beliefs in several Asian countries, such as Phosop in Thailand, Po Nagar in Cambodia, and Inari in Japan," he noted. These rich historical threads have evolved into diverse artistic expressions, including dance, music, harvest rituals, and agricultural calendars.

The event will commence with a "Parade Payung Nusantara" (Archipelago Umbrella Parade) and a festival market showcasing crafts and fashion from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and creative communities. A culinary market will also be part of the experience. Approximately 150 art groups from across Indonesia are expected to participate in various performances, including dance, music, and fashion shows.

Beyond celebrating Indonesian culture, FESPIN 2026 also embraces Asian Cultural Diplomacy by including delegates from Thailand, South Korea, and India. These international participants will collaborate on fashion performances, further broadening the festival's scope and fostering cross-cultural exchange.
