Industry Greats Mourn Shi Nansheng; Lin Qingxia Attends Solemnly, Leung and Lau Hold Hands

A memorial service was held on August 2nd at the Grand Hyatt Hotel for Shi Nansheng, a revered figure in Hong Kong's film industry, who passed away on July 13th at the age of 75. The ceremony, which was private, was attended by nearly a hundred filmmakers from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China, reflecting Shi's significant impact on Chinese-language cinema.

Among the notable attendees were actors Lin Qingxia, Tony Leung, and Carina Lau, as well as directors Tsui Hark, John Woo, and Sammo Hung. Hong Kong media observed Lin Qingxia arriving with a somber expression, while Carina Lau was seen holding Tony Leung's hand, underscoring the deep respect and affection Shi Nansheng commanded within the industry.

Shi Nansheng was a pioneering producer, known for her work on numerous acclaimed films. She co-founded the influential "Film Workshop" in 1984 with her former husband, acclaimed director Tsui Hark. While Shi managed the production, budgeting, and casting, Tsui Hark focused on creative direction and directing. Together, they were instrumental in creating classics such as "A Better Tomorrow," "A Chinese Ghost Story," and "Once Upon a Time in China," ushering in a golden era for Hong Kong cinema.

Their collaboration was legendary, with Tsui Hark once publicly expressing his deep admiration for Shi, calling her "forever the best woman." Although their marriage ended in divorce around 2014, their professional partnership left an indelible mark on the film world. The memorial service served as a poignant tribute to her legacy as one of the most influential producers in Chinese cinema.
