INEC offers JAMB biometric verification technology to strengthen exam integrity

Nigeria’s electoral commission has offered to help the country’s university admissions examination body strengthen its biometric verification systems.

INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan made the offer during a courtesy visit by JAMB Registrar Segun Aina and his management team. He directed the commission’s information and communications technology directorate to review JAMB’s request through a proof-of-concept assessment.

The assessment will examine whether INEC has biometric verification equipment available and suitable for possible use by JAMB. Aina said the examination board approached INEC because of its experience with biometric verification technology and asked the commission to consider providing machines that might no longer be in service.

Amupitan described JAMB’s work as vital to national development and the progress of Nigerian youth. He also pointed to INEC’s recent elections, including the Anambra and Ekiti governorship polls, the Osun governorship election, the FCT Area Council election and several by-elections. He said observers from the Office of the National Security Adviser and the UK High Commission had commended their credibility and peaceful conduct.

The meeting was presented as part of growing cooperation between government agencies. Amupitan said INEC would explore further areas of partnership with JAMB, while Aina thanked the commission for receiving his delegation.
