Infantino should quit as FIFA president, says Canadian prime minister

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has publicly stated that he no longer has confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino's ability to lead world football's governing body. Carney, whose country co-hosted the 2026 World Cup, expressed his view following Infantino's now-abandoned proposal to introduce private investment into the World Cup.

Infantino has faced mounting criticism, including from within FIFA, over his handling of the private investment plan. Calls for his resignation intensified after he withdrew the proposal last Saturday. Carney specifically pointed to Infantino's reported failure to discuss the plan with FIFA's senior management team as a critical misstep.

Certainly I don’t have confidence in Mr Infantino, after this point, given what transpired.

"This is not how you run any business, a small business, let alone something that is a global responsibility like football," Carney told reporters in Toronto. He argued that such a lapse in consultation should be "fatal" to Infantino's leadership at FIFA.

Infantino held emergency talks with FIFA directors in Morocco earlier this week to address the crisis. He had previously enjoyed a period of success following the expanded 48-team World Cup co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. However, the scrapped plan, which involved creating a commercial subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise, has triggered significant global backlash and poses an unprecedented threat to his presidency.
