Injured Dolphin 'Anmogi' Rescued in South Korea

A bottlenose dolphin, affectionately nicknamed 'Anmogi' by locals, has been rescued from Gangneung Port in South Korea after sustaining significant injuries. The dolphin, which had been living alone in the port area since last year, was found with a deep, 20cm-wide wound on its waist and showed a concerning lack of fear towards humans, often approaching vessels.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries initiated the rescue operation, guiding Anmogi into a controlled area before using nets to guide it towards a waiting team of divers. The dolphin was then carefully transported via a stretcher and a specialized tank to the Ulsan Whale Ecology Experience Center, a facility dedicated to the rescue and treatment of marine animals. The ministry stated that the rescue was prompted by the increasing risk of Anmogi dying in the wild.

Anmogi's solitary lifestyle in Gangneung Port had previously garnered attention, as bottlenose dolphins typically inhabit warmer waters around Jeju Island and are usually found in pods. The dolphin's unusual behavior, including repeatedly rubbing against ship propellers, indicated a potential health crisis and a diminished natural wariness.

Officials at the ministry expressed their commitment to Anmogi's recovery, stating, "Anmogi is currently maintaining a stable condition. We will do our best to help Anmogi recover its health and swim freely in the sea again." The plan is to conduct thorough diagnostics and provide intensive treatment with the ultimate goal of returning the dolphin to its natural habitat.
