Inland Shipping: Lower Saxony eases truck ban due to low water levels

Due to persistently low water levels on its waterways, the German state of Lower Saxony is temporarily suspending its ban on truck traffic for Sundays and holidays. This decision aims to ease the transition of essential goods transport to road networks, thereby mitigating the severe restrictions currently impacting inland shipping.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Transport in Hanover announced that the exemption applies to commercial transport using trucks over 7.5 tons and those with trailers. This measure is deemed necessary as a substitute for transport routes that have become significantly limited due to the low water levels. The exception is effective immediately and will remain in place until August 31.

Low water levels have caused considerable disruptions to inland navigation, posing a growing threat to the flow of goods. The ministry emphasized that the exception is intended to ensure a smooth shift of transport to road carriers and to avoid discrepancies in regulations across different German states. "The tense situation on relevant federal waterways requires pragmatic solutions," stated Lower Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs and Transport, Grant Hendrik Tonne (SPD).

The primary goal is to stabilize supply chains and cargo flows, preventing potential production stoppages. However, Lower Saxony expressed a desire for better-coordinated action among the federal states, noting that the federal government had only recently requested the lifting of driving bans. This suggests a need for more proactive and unified responses to such environmental challenges affecting logistics.
