Insecurity: Tinubu okays army battalion for Kwara

President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of a new Army battalion in Omu Aran, Kwara State, a move aimed at bolstering security and intensifying the fight against banditry, terrorism, and other violent crimes. This initiative is expected to lead to increased deployment of troops and military hardware to enhance security operations, particularly in areas experiencing a rise in kidnappings and bandit attacks.

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced the approval, highlighting it as a testament to the Federal Government's commitment to addressing security challenges. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for fulfilling a promise to the state and to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, for processing the request swiftly. The governor believes the new battalion will significantly strengthen counterterrorism and anti-kidnapping operations.

The development occurs against a backdrop of renewed concerns over worsening insecurity in parts of Kwara. Residents in communities like Babanla have recently raised alarms about the deteriorating security situation, alleging that bandits operate with ease and that influential individuals discourage reporting of attacks. A recent incident in Babanla reportedly resulted in one resident's death and another's abduction, intensifying fears among locals who claim the area has become a base for criminal gangs.
