Insurgents strike over 70 locations across southern Thailand in coordinated arson, bomb attacks

Suspected insurgents unleashed a wave of coordinated arson and bomb attacks across more than 70 locations in Thailand's four southernmost provinces over the weekend. Authorities reported at least three injuries resulting from the widespread violence, which targeted government buildings, shops, cars, and utility poles.

The incidents occurred primarily on Saturday evening and continued into Sunday, affecting Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and parts of Songkhla. A rail line in Narathiwat was hit by explosives, leading to the suspension of services in that section. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Authorities had received intelligence nearly two months ago warning of attacks on government buildings, shops and power infrastructure.

This surge in violence comes at a critical juncture as Thailand attempts to restart peace talks with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), the main separatist group involved in the long-running insurgency. The conflict, primarily driven by ethnic Malay Muslims seeking greater autonomy or independence, has claimed over 7,800 lives since its latest escalation in 2004. The region, historically part of the Malay sultanate of Patani, was formally incorporated into Thailand in 1909.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has urged security forces to prioritize public safety and imposed a curfew in Narathiwat. Lieutenant General Norathip Poinok, commander of the Thai army in the southern region, stated that authorities had received intelligence warnings about potential attacks on government buildings, shops, and power infrastructure nearly two months prior. He described the attacks as potential retaliation for recent crackdowns on insurgents and illicit businesses.
