Intense heat returns to Madrid, with temperatures reaching 40C in some areas

Madrid is facing another day of intense heat, with temperatures expected to approach 40C across much of the region and reach that level in some eastern areas.

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, has issued a yellow heat warning for the entire Madrid region from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Temperatures will exceed 34C in the lower parts of the Sierra and 36C across broad areas elsewhere.

The highest readings are expected in the east. Alcalá de Henares could reach 40C, while Aranjuez and Getafe are forecast to reach 39C. Madrid city is expected to peak at 38C. Skies will remain cloudy for much of the day, with the possibility of light rain and scattered showers, particularly in the Sierra, where storms could develop. Light haze is also possible.

Minimum temperatures are expected to rise across the region. Maximum temperatures will dip slightly or remain close to recent levels. Despite the heat, Madrid recorded far fewer heat-related deaths in August than the previous year, according to the Daily Mortality Monitoring System. The system estimated 53 deaths linked to high temperatures in the region last month, compared with 413 in August 2025.

Across Spain, 2,149 deaths were attributed to heat in August. That figure was close to the 2,184 recorded in 2025 and was the second-highest August total since the monitoring system began operating in 2015.
