Intense heatwave grips South Korea, temperatures exceed 39°C

South Korea is grappling with a severe heatwave, with several regions in the southern part of the country experiencing temperatures exceeding 39 degrees Celsius over the weekend. Areas like Yangsan in South Gyeongsang Province recorded highs of 39.1°C on Saturday and 39.3°C on Sunday. Other regions, including Miryang, Gyeongju, Hapcheon, Uiryeong, Daegu, and Gwangyang in South Jeolla Province, also saw temperatures ranging between 38-39°C.

These extreme temperatures triggered "heatwave major warnings" in affected areas, indicating a level of heat that poses a risk of fatalities from heat-related illnesses. Most of the country, except for parts of Gangwon Province and Jeju Island, was under a heatwave advisory. Tropical nights, where temperatures do not drop below 25°C, have also been prevalent nationwide.

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that the hot and humid weather, influenced by the North Pacific high-pressure system, will persist. Morning temperatures are expected to range from 23-26°C, while daytime highs could reach 31-39°C. This system is known for causing "steaming heat" by increasing perceived temperatures due to high humidity.

Authorities are emphasizing the need for thorough preparation against the heatwave and tropical nights. The danger was underscored by a recent incident where a foreign worker in Haenam County, South Jeolla Province, collapsed and died while working in a field during a heatwave warning. The 30-year-old Thai national reportedly felt dizzy and collapsed while moving to rest. This incident is being investigated as a potential heatstroke fatality, which would be the first recorded in the Jeonnam-Gwangju region this year.
