Interior Minister's achievements project Nigerian youth positively

The achievements of Nigeria's Interior Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, over the past three years have significantly boosted the image of Nigerian youth. His tenure has demonstrated that young people can excel when entrusted with responsibility, fostering hope for their leadership potential.

Tunji-Ojo, a Nigerian engineer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, previously served as a member of the House of Representatives. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him as Minister of Interior in August 2023. His ministry encompasses the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Federal Fire Service.

The minister has been recognized for implementing crucial reforms. These include digitizing the passport application process, introducing airport e-Gates, and addressing extensive passport backlogs. In the correctional service, he has spearheaded efforts to decongest facilities and modernize them, including programs to pay fines for inmates serving time for minor offenses.

His focus on border and asset security involves integrating intelligence data and strengthening border patrols. The NSCDC has been utilized to protect critical national infrastructure. For Nigerians in the diaspora, Tunji-Ojo's introduction of a contactless passport renewal system for those in Europe, following a successful rollout in Canada, has been particularly well-received. This system allows eligible Nigerians abroad to renew their passports online without needing to visit an office.
