Interior Ministry: Fire on Suva Planina spreads in three directions as firefighters, foresters, residents and helicopters battle flames

The forest fire on Suva Planina remains active after breaking out on August 4, and flames have now spread in three directions. The fire is moving toward the municipalities of Gadžin Han and Bela Palanka, as well as the city municipality of Niška Banja, Serbia’s Interior Ministry said.

More than 170 people are taking part in the response. They include emergency-sector personnel, volunteer firefighters, employees of Serbiašume, mountain rescuers, mountaineers, members of a local motorcycle club and other forces. Together, they have 46 vehicles at their disposal.

The fire began between the site known as Devojački grob and Trem, the highest peak of Suva Planina. It is burning humus, dry grass, low vegetation, bushes and, in some areas, pine forest. Steep cliffs, difficult terrain and strong winds make ground firefighting impossible at many locations.

The Interior Ministry said three helicopters from its Helicopter Unit joined the operation. A Russian Il-76 aircraft has also made nine sorties since the fire began and contributed significantly to bringing the situation under control.

No deaths or injuries have been reported, and no residential or auxiliary buildings are currently under threat. The ministry said Serbia has 34 active fires in open areas, while firefighters and rescuers responded to 240 incidents in the previous 24 hours, including 204 fires.
