Intermittent rain expected in South Korea until Thursday, with heavy downpours possible

South Korea is bracing for continued rainfall, with intermittent showers expected nationwide through Thursday. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that central regions, particularly Seoul and the surrounding Gyeonggi Province, will face intense downpours on Tuesday, potentially delivering 30 to 50 millimeters of rain per hour. Some areas could receive over 120 millimeters in total.

Heavy rainfall has already impacted several regions, with Gunwi in Daegu recording the highest cumulative rainfall of 111.0 mm as of Sunday morning. Other areas in North Gyeongsang Province and mountainous regions of Gangwon also saw significant precipitation. While Seoul experienced less intense rain, totaling around 10-13 mm, the forecast indicates a significant increase in intensity for Tuesday.

The rain is expected to be particularly strong in the northeastern parts of North Gyeongsang Province on Sunday afternoon, with hourly rates of 20-30 mm predicted between 3 PM and 9 PM. On Tuesday, the intensity will shift to central regions, with potential for hourly rainfall of 30-50 mm in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province, and even heavier amounts in mountainous areas of Gangwon and northern coastal regions of South Chungcheong Province.

Despite the ongoing monsoon season, high temperatures are expected to persist. Daytime highs are forecast to hover around 31 degrees Celsius in most areas, reaching up to 35 degrees in Gyeongsang Province and Jeju Island. Tropical nights, where nighttime temperatures do not drop below 25 degrees Celsius, are also anticipated in several southern regions, including Jeolla, Gyeongnam, and Jeju.
