Man drowns after being swept away by strong current in South Korean valley

A man in his 60s has died after being swept away by a powerful current in a valley in Mungyeong, South Korea. The incident occurred on July 19th, when the man was enjoying a moment of rest by the stream with his hiking companions.

According to the Gyeongbuk Provincial Fire Department, a report was received around 2:38 p.m. concerning a man being swept away by the water in Seonyu Valley, Gaeun-eup, Mungyeong City. Emergency services, utilizing drones and other resources, initiated a search operation downstream.

The man was found unconscious approximately 300 meters from the accident site around 3:57 p.m. Rescuers managed to retrieve him and transport him to a nearby hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead. Investigations suggest the man slipped and fell into the strong current while dipping his feet in the valley after completing a hike with his group.

Although there was little rain at the immediate accident site, the Mungyeong area had recorded cumulative rainfall of 80 to 90 millimeters between July 18th and the time of the incident. Police and fire authorities are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the accident with the help of witnesses.
