Internal PSD faction pushes for alliance with AUR party

A faction within Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD) is increasingly pushing for a governing alliance with the AUR party, according to political sources speaking to Adevărul. This movement suggests a significant internal division regarding the PSD's future political direction.

The group, described as "pro-AUR," is reportedly led by Paul Stănescu, the former secretary-general of the PSD. Sources indicate that Stănescu, through trusted intermediaries, is in contact with both AUR leaders and figures associated with Călin Georgescu, a presidential candidate supported by AUR. Stănescu's influence is particularly noted in Olt County, where Georgescu has made visits organized by Florin Ciobanu, a loyal associate of Stănescu and former advisor to agricultural ministers close to him.

The pro-AUR camp in the PSD is becoming increasingly numerous.

This internal pressure is directed at PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu, who publicly rejects any collaboration with AUR, led by George Simion. Grindeanu has reportedly warned party members that a coalition with AUR, which he characterizes as extremist and viewed unfavorably by European socialists, could jeopardize Romania's access to European Union funding.

While Stănescu is identified as the leader of this "sovereignist" wing within the PSD, other prominent figures are said to quietly support an alliance with AUR. These include former Prime Minister Mihai Tudose, Ionuț Pucheanu, the mayor of Galați, and Gheorghe Șoldan, president of the Suceava County Council. Their collective pressure aims to compel Grindeanu to negotiate a power-sharing agreement with AUR, despite the potential international repercussions.
