International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan Dismissed Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

Member states of the International Criminal Court (ICC) have voted to dismiss Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, following accusations of sexual harassment that surfaced nearly two years ago. Diplomats confirmed the decision, which marks a historic moment as it is the first time an ICC chief prosecutor has been removed from office.

Karim Khan, a British lawyer, was accused of sexual misconduct towards a colleague, allegations he has consistently denied. The vote, held at an extraordinary meeting in New York, saw 125 member states support his dismissal. The case has created divisions among human rights organizations, court staff, and member states, particularly at a time when the ICC faces significant challenges, including opposition from the United States aimed at undermining its work.

Khan, 56, was formally suspended in June after a report by the court's oversight body's Executive Committee concluded he had committed a "serious breach of duty." Documents obtained by the Associated Press indicate Khan was in a sexual relationship with a colleague and attempted to prevent her from pursuing her accusations. He disputes these findings.

Several nations, including the Netherlands (the court's host country), France, and Norway, were among the first to publicly announce their intention to vote for his dismissal. Norway's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik, stated that Khan's behavior was "undoubtedly proven" to constitute sexual harassment and abuse of power. The President of the Assembly of States Parties, Pål Wrange, noted that the vote was held in a closed session to address a "complex and sensitive disciplinary matter."
