International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples observed today

Today, August 9, is observed as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, a date chosen to commemorate the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva in 1982. This day highlights the estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples living across 90 countries.

Despite comprising less than 6 percent of the global population, Indigenous Peoples represent at least 15 percent of the world's poorest individuals. They are the custodians of a vast majority of the world's estimated 7,000 languages and embody approximately 5,000 distinct cultures. These communities are recognized for preserving unique social, cultural, economic, and political characteristics that differentiate them from dominant surrounding societies.

Indigenous Peoples are often described as guardians of rich traditions and distinctive ways of interacting with both their communities and the environment. They possess deep connections to their lands, territories, and natural resources, maintaining social structures and practices that set them apart.

However, these unique communities face considerable challenges in protecting their rights and identities. Historically, their rights have frequently been disregarded, leading to their classification as some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups globally. The international community is increasingly acknowledging the necessity of special measures to safeguard their rights, preserve their distinct cultures, and sustain their traditional ways of life.
