Inumet issues yellow alert for locally strong thunderstorms

Uruguay's Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) issued a yellow alert Sunday for thunderstorms that could be locally severe. The warning was in effect until 11:00 AM. Inumet advised that "atmospheric disturbance associated with a humid and unstable air mass affects the country, generating storms, some of them locally strong." The institute cautioned that "intense electrical activity accompanied by abundant rain in short periods, occasional hail, and strong wind gusts may be recorded in storm areas." Inumet also noted that "temporary improvements are expected during the validity of the warning." The institute stated it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates. The yellow alert was issued for Sunday, July 19, 2026. Several departments were included in the warning, including Artigas, Paysandú, Rivera, Salto, Tacuarembó, Colonia, Flores, Río Negro, San José, and Soriano, with specific towns listed for some departments.
