Ioannis Varvitsiotis, historic New Democracy figure, dies at 93

Ioannis Varvitsiotis, a towering figure in post-war Greek politics and a veteran of the New Democracy party, has passed away at the age of 93. He died peacefully at his home in Athens on Sunday, his birthday.

Born in Athens on August 2, 1933, Varvitsiotis studied law at the University of Athens and furthered his education in Germany, specializing in corporate law. He began his political career in 1960, earning the trust of Konstantinos Karamanlis. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 1961 and consistently won re-election throughout his career.

During the military junta, Varvitsiotis was an active participant in resistance efforts to restore democracy. He was arrested and held in isolation in 1968. Following the restoration of democracy, he held numerous high-profile government positions. These included Deputy Minister of Interior, Minister of Commerce, Minister of National Education and Religious Affairs, Minister of National Defense, and Minister of Justice.

Beyond his national roles, Varvitsiotis served as vice-president of the European People's Party from 1985 to 1996 and was a vice-president of New Democracy. He was also a prolific author of legal and political studies. His extensive contributions were recognized with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Phoenix from the President of Greece and high honors from foreign nations. He is survived by his four children, including former minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.
