iOS 27 brings major CarPlay redesign with Siri AI, Apple TV and six more features

Apple is turning CarPlay into more than a way to mirror an iPhone screen, with iOS 27 adding artificial intelligence, entertainment and electric-vehicle tools to the in-car platform.

The update will bring an upgraded Siri experience to CarPlay on the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models. Drivers will be able to ask for travel information, plan routes and access related recommendations by voice, reducing the need to pick up a phone while driving. Siri conversations will also sync with the Siri app on the iPhone, allowing users to review and continue them after leaving the car.

Video playback is another prominent addition. In vehicles that support CarPlay video, users can send compatible AirPlay video apps from an iPhone to the car’s display. Apple TV will be among the first confirmed supported apps. Apple will also allow developers to create CarPlay apps with video-browsing features, although viewing will remain limited to times when the vehicle is parked, such as while waiting or charging an electric vehicle. Support may also depend on the vehicle’s hardware.

CarPlay’s visual design will adopt the same language as iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate, including new wallpapers and Liquid Glass elements for icons such as Weather and Maps. A MiniPlayer will let users see album art, song information and playback controls while browsing maps or other content. Apple is also improving GPS positioning, turn and direction recognition, and the speed and stability of wireless connections.

For electric-vehicle drivers, Apple Maps and Google Maps will be able to share route information with the vehicle system. The car can then use remaining battery capacity and driving range to determine whether charging is needed and suggest suitable charging stations along the route.
