IPS officer arrested for allegedly aiding fugitive in Jerusalem murder case

An Israel Prison Service officer has been arrested on suspicion of obstructing justice and aiding a fugitive connected to the murder of 19-year-old Benayahu Razi in Jerusalem earlier this month. The 34-year-old officer, from Hod Hasharon, is accused of leveraging her position and personal relationship with an inmate to assist the main suspect, 17-year-old Avior Sasson, who remains at large.

Investigators believe the inmate, identified as Sasson's brother, used the officer's cellphone to help Sasson hide and evade authorities. The precise nature of the assistance, including whether instructions or information were passed, is currently under investigation. The covert inquiry began after prison service intelligence officials flagged suspicions about the officer's conduct.

Police have intensified their efforts to locate Sasson, publicly releasing his name and photograph despite his age. They have warned that anyone assisting him could face charges for aiding an offender. Razi was fatally stabbed in a Jerusalem apartment on July 11, and several other suspects have been arrested for their alleged roles in arranging the meeting and facilitating the escape of those involved.

Superintendent Rotem Hila Zaken stated that the manhunt is proceeding around the clock, with investigators working tirelessly to gather information leading to Sasson's arrest. The officer faces charges of obstruction of justice and breach of trust, with investigators deciding whether to seek an extension of her detention.
