Iran accuses French diplomats of secret activity in Tehran

Iran's Intelligence Ministry has leveled accusations against two French diplomats previously detained in Tehran, alleging they were involved in covert activities aimed at establishing a network within and outside the country. The ministry claims that documents seized during the incident indicate these efforts, with some reportedly bearing the signature of a former French ambassador to Iran. Security forces reportedly encountered the diplomats during a judicial operation and subsequently transferred them to French representatives via Iran's diplomatic police. Tehran has demanded an explanation from Paris regarding what it termed "illegal and interventionist" activities. Iran has also issued a warning, stating it will respond to any recurrence of such conduct. France has contested Iran's account, asserting that the diplomats were held for nearly four hours without access to their embassy. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot described the incident as a "serious violation of diplomatic immunity" and stated that one of the diplomats was physically assaulted. Iran has denied these claims of mistreatment. According to France, the diplomats were engaged in programs supporting Iranian civil society, including artists and scientists. Both diplomats have since returned to France.
