Iran attacks U.S. bases in Jordan in retaliation for bombing of Larak Island

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it attacked two U.S. bases in Jordan with missiles and drones, describing the operation as retaliation for a U.S. bombing of Iran’s Larak Island hours earlier.

The Guard said the strikes targeted the Al Azraq and Rey Hussein bases and caused “great damage,” but no independent account of the impact on the bases had emerged. Jordan’s military said its air-defense systems intercepted eight missiles inside the country’s airspace. It said the missiles caused no damage or casualties.

“The Jordanian Armed Forces confronted these attacks and managed to destroy the missiles before they posed a threat to citizens or property,” the army said. U.S. media reports said American forces also intercepted the attacks on Jordan.

The U.S. Central Command said its earlier strike on Larak Island targeted rockets loaded with naval mines that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard planned to place in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM called the planned mine deployment “an imminent threat.”

The Revolutionary Guard said the U.S. attack, described as the first against Iranian targets in more than a month, caused deaths and injuries without giving figures. A Guard spokesman called the strike a “terrorist aggression” that would be punished.
